La capilla mayor de San Román de Toledo: ¿Un templo de Zorobabel al romano?

Abstract

La parroquia de San Román de Toledo alberga en su capilla mayor una de las mejores obras castellanas de la arquitectura del siglo XVI. En este artículo, en el que se publican las condiciones de Alonso de Covarrubias (1488-1570) y el contrato de Pedro de Velasco de 1552, se analizan esta capilla y su retablo (1552-1553, quizá obra de Gregorio Bigarny) en relación con sus clientes doña María Niño de Ribera, IV Señora de Noez y Villaumbrosa, viuda del comendador de Monreal y secretario de los Reyes Católicos y Carlos V don Lope de Conchillos, y su hijo don Pedro Niño de Conchillos y Ribera, V Señor de Noez y Villaumbrosa; con los documentos y la arquitectura real; y con sus inscripciones bíblicas y su iconografía profana y veterotestamentaria.

The parish church of San Román in Toledo houses in its main chapel one of the most interesting works of Castilian architecture from the 16th century. In this article, in which the terms of the building contract by Alonso de Covarrubias (1488-1570) and Pedro de Velasco (1552) are published, the chapel and its altarpiece (perhaps the work of Gregorio Bigarny, 1552-1553) are analysed in relation to its clients, María Niño de Ribera, Fourth Lady of Noez and Villaumbrosa, the widow of the Commander of Monreal and royal secretary to the Catholic Monarchs and Charles the Fifth and Lope de Conchillos, and her son Pedro Niño de Conchillos and Ribera, the Fifth Lord of Noez and Villaumbrosa, whith the documents and its actual architecture; and with its biblical inscriptions and its secular and biblical iconography.
