Tradicionalmente se ha sostenido que los espectáculos de gladiadores desaparecieron en Hispania durante los primeros decenios del siglo IV. Sin embargo, un examen critico de las fuentes aducidas -cánones pseudoiliberritanos, mosaico de Rielves e inscripciones constantinianas del anfiteatro de Tarragona- pone de manifiesto que no pueden utilizarse para sostener este aserto. En nuestra opinión, tal desaparición está relacionada con el declive municipal iniciado en Hispania en época de los Severos, por lo que cabria fechar los últimos espectáculos de gladiadores celebrados en Hispania durante el primer tercio del siglo III.
Traditionally, it has been maintained that gladiatorial shows disappeared in Hispania during the first decades of the 4th century. However, a critical analysis of the sources adduced -the pseudoiliberritan canons, the mosaic of Rielves and the Constantinian inscriptions of the amphitheatre of Tarragona- reveal that they cannot be used to maintain this assertion. In our opinion, this disappearance is related to the municipal decadence which started in Hispania in the Severian period. Thus, the last gladiatorial shows celebrated in Hispania could be dated during the first third of the 3rd century.
