A lo largo del siglo XIX y del primer tercio del siglo XX la pervivencia de estas familias se desarrolla durante dos o tres generaciones. En la ciudad de Palencia una familia consigue permanecer en el poder local desde el inicio del Reinado de Isabel II hasta el golpe de estado de 1936, sorteando los cambios políticos y adaptándose a las nuevas situaciones, perviviendo durante cuatro generaciones. En este artículo recorremos la vida de los Martínez de Azcoitia y su presencia en el Ayuntamiento palentino a lo largo de esos 100 años como ejemplo de los elementos de apoyo que posibilitan que, una parte de la élite económica, se convierta en élite política dominante. The process of political change in Spanish liberalism is characterized by many different factors through the lives of families at different political levels, which reaches a climax during the restoration. All through the 19th and a third of the 20th century, the survival of these families developed during two or three generations. In the city of Palencia a family managed to stay in local power from the start of the reign of Elizabeth II to the overthrow of the government in 1936, negotiating the political changes and adapting to new situations, and surviving through four generations.
