Gaspar de Carvajal, fraile de la orden dominicana nacido en Extremadura, España, en los albores del siglo XVI, se establece en la historia y en la literatura como el escriba oficial de la conturbada expedición liderada por Francisco de Orellana y, de esa manera, se convierte en protagonista de una de las más controvertidas aventuras en el más grande río del mundo, el Amazonas, río cuyo bautizo representa el papel de ese religioso en el siglo XVI. La Amazonomaquia, concebida como arte producida por griegos relativa a las guerreras Amazonas, en este trabajo recibe una nueva carga semántica: de arte/ historia/ imágenes producidas también por el fraile Gaspar de Carvajal.
Gaspar de Carvajal, friar of the Dominican order born in Extremadura, Spain, in the early sixteenth century, stablished himself in both history and literature as the official scribe of the troubled expedition led by Francisco de Orellana. Therein, he helped lead one of the most controversial adventures in the largest river in the world, the Amazon, whose baptism represents the role of the religious in the sixteenth century. The Amazonomachy, conceived as art about the Amazonas warriors produced by Greeks, in this paper gets a new semantic: art / history / images produced by the friar Gaspar de Carvajal too.
