Tras el catastrófico incendio del año 1561 en Valladolid, en el que se quemó la mayor
parte del barrio comercial de la villa, la actitud decidida del monarca Felipe II, nacido allí, y
la firme voluntad de los miembros del concejo municipal y sus vecinos, permite que se
reconstruya y de paso se mejore la traza de Valladolid, que había dejado de ser la sede de la
Corte dos años antes. Sesenta y ocho documentos –cédulas reales en su mayoría–, datados
entre 1564 y 1574 y copiados en un códice misceláneo conservado en Archivo Histórico
Nacional, contienen algunas de las decisiones que tomó el monarca para garantizar tanto el
proceso de reedificación como la uniformidad de la traza.
After the catastrophic fire of 1561 in Valladolid, where most of the commercial
district of the town burned, the determined attitude of King Philip II, born there, and the firm
resolve of the members of the City Council and its neighbours, allows rebuilds and,
incidentally, will improve the town planning of Valladolid, who had ceased to be the seat of
the Court two years earlier. Documents (mostly letters patent) between 1564 and 1574 are
collected, preserved in the National Historical Archive, containing some of the decisions of
the monarch, aimed at ensuring both the process of rebuilding as the uniformity of the trace.
