Insults – in this case, among women– led to a decrease in the honour and reputation of the slandered person and his or her family. Therefore, when facing this charge, both Castilian legislation and courts of justice leant toward a type of conciliatory sentences, aware that excessive harshness could result in a greater damage within the patterns of proximity and coexistence in the society of the Ancien Régime.</mods:abstract>
