Las úlceras por presión son áreas de piel lesionada que se producen por
permanecer en una misma posición durante demasiado tiempo.
Constituyen un marcador de los cuidados proporcionados por los profesionales
de enfermería y un problema de salud pública importante, debido a las graves
complicaciones que se derivan y a la dificultad que ocasiona en muchos casos
su cicatrización.
En consecuencia, se ha incrementado el interés por el uso de la miel como
tratamiento en estas lesiones, no solo por sus conocidas propiedades
antimicrobianas, a pesar de que este producto no esté regulado como tal en
nuestro país.
El principal objetivo de este trabajo es fomentar el uso de la miel como
tratamiento para la curación de las úlceras por presión y dar a conocer las
propiedades de la misma como recurso en el medio sanitario.
Para ello, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de la literatura existente,
definiendo las palabras clave a través del formato PICO y seleccionando todo
tipo de documentos científicos tanto en inglés como en castellano, a texto
completo y con una antigüedad posterior al año 2000 debido a la escasez de
estudios existentes sobre este tema, para analizar posteriormente su contenido
aplicando la lectura crítica correspondiente.
A partir del análisis de la evidencia seleccionada, se destacan en los resultados
el gran poder antimicrobiano de la miel frente al Staphylococcus aureus y la
Pseudomona aeruginosa, así como también una eficacia superior, en
comparación con antibióticos de primera elección y productos como la
povidona yodada y la amplia gama de apósitos existente, reduciendo
notablemente el dolor y mejorando en gran medida el proceso de cicatrización.
Esta revisión bibliográfica podría ser, un punto de partida para un estudio de
investigación posterior, que incrementase la escasa literatura existente sobre el
tema y que apoyase el uso de la miel como tratamiento para la úlceras por
presión y así fomentar su regularización como producto sanitario en nuestro
país.
Pressure ulcers are areas of injured skin that are produced by staying in the
same position for too much time. They are a marker of care provided by nursing
professionals and an important public health problem due to the serious
complications that arise and the difficulty that often results in healing.
Consequently, interest in the use of honey as treatment in these lesions has
increased, not only because of its known antimicrobial power, although this
product is not regulated as such in our country. The principal objective of this
work is to promote the use of honey as a treatment for the healing of pressure
ulcers and to reveal the properties of honey as a resource in the sanitary
environment.
For this, it has been made a bibliographic review of the existing literature was
carried out, defining the key words through the PICO format and selecting all
kinds of scientific documents in both English and Spanish, in full text and with
an antiquity after the year 2000 due to the Shortage of existing studies on this
subject, to analyze later its content applying the corresponding critical reading.
Based on the analysis of the selected evidence, the great antimicrobial power of
honey against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomona aeruginosa, as well as
superior efficacy compared to first choice antibiotics and products such as
povidone iodine and the wide range of existing dressings, significantly reducing
pain and greatly improving the healing process.
This bibliographic review could be a starting point for a subsequent research
study that would increase the limited existing literature on the subject and
support the use of honey as a treatment for pressure ulcers and thus encourage
its regularization as a health product in our country.
