En un momento de cambios y contradicciones para la sociedad española esa apariencia externa seguía vinculada al estatus social y el mantenimiento de la jerarquía establecida, pero al mismo tiempo a través del vestido se manifestaron cambios culturales, sociales y económicos, así como las profundas brechas entre grupos sociales y regiones. Creemos que los acalorados debates que se suscitaron entorno a la apariencia fueron una expresión más de ese choque de mentalidades. Por ello consideramos que analizar estas cuestiones constituye una forma acertada de acercarnos a una determinada época. External appearance has always been important in human societies, but it acquired new meanings in public sphere during the self-contradictory and changing 18th century in Spain. In this work we try to approach the role of appearances, fashion and clothing in this period: as a mark of social distinction in order to maintenance the traditional status hierarchy, but also as an indication of social, cultural and consumption changes or social and regional differences.
