El vestido, la moda y la apariencia pública en la España de fines del Antiguo Régimen (siglo XVIII)

Si bien la apariencia pública fue importante en otras épocas, es en el siglo XVIII cuando esta
adquirió nuevos significados. En un momento de cambios y contradicciones para la sociedad
española esa apariencia externa seguía vinculada al estatus social y el mantenimiento de la
jerarquía establecida, pero al mismo tiempo a través del vestido se manifestaron cambios
culturales, sociales y económicos, así como las profundas brechas entre grupos sociales y
regiones. Creemos que los acalorados debates que se suscitaron entorno a la apariencia fueron
una expresión más de ese choque de mentalidades. Por ello consideramos que analizar estas
cuestiones constituye una forma acertada de acercarnos a una determinada época.
External appearance has always been important in human societies, but it acquired new
meanings in public sphere during the self-contradictory and changing 18th century in Spain.
In this work we try to approach the role of appearances, fashion and clothing in this period: as
a mark of social distinction in order to maintenance the traditional status hierarchy, but also as
an indication of social, cultural and consumption changes or social and regional differences.
We have the conviction that clothing and appearance, and the debate which they generated,
were in that society an expression of deeper issues and struggles, and therefore analyzing
these questions we can understand better that society and its mentalities.
