Por una parte, se trata de una introducción al mundo de las microfinanzas y sus peculiaridades, haciendo referencia a diferentes autores. Por otra parte, se estudian las instituciones microfinancieras de América Latina y el Caribe, intentando identificar las características diferenciales entre, por un lado, América Central y el Caribe y, por otro lado, América del Sur. Para ello, se ha estimado un modelo logit, utilizando como variables explicativas diferentes indicadores económicos y financieros correspondientes a las instituciones analizadas, que son un total de 41, de las cuales 17 son de Centroamérica o Caribe y 24 de Sudamérica. Consideramos como variable dependiente que la institución microfinanciera pertenezca a Centroamérica o Caribe, o de lo contrario, forme parte de Sudamérica. Como resultado final, el modelo estimado nos identifica cuatro variables que resultan las mejores para explicar las diferencias entre las zonas de América Latina anteriormente mencionadas: logaritmo neperiano de los activos, Préstamos fallidos no provisionados sobre recursos propios; rentabilidad financiera o sobre recursos propios (ROE), calculada con resultados netos después de impuestos; y PIB per cápita en variación anual This work seeks to achieve a dual purpose. On the one hand, it is an introduction to the world of microfinance and its peculiarities, with reference to different authors. On the other hand, it studies microfinance institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean, trying to identify the differentiating characteristics between, on the one hand, Central America and the Caribbean and, on the other, South America.
