En el presente trabajo nos proponemos examinar la influencia de la filosofía del
célebre filósofo alemán Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860) en la corriente literaria
denominada generación del 98, así como en dos autores de esta que consideramos
claves: Pio Baroja y Miguel de Unamuno. En el transcurso de la exposición iremos
desgranando elementos del pensamiento de Schopenhauer para establecer similitudes
con la obra literaria de ambos. Tendremos en cuenta las implicaciones filosóficas
presentes en sus novelas, a veces de manera bastante explícita, ya sea gracias al
pensamiento de sus personajes, a su actitud ante la vida o con el tipo de realidad que
les sirve de atmosfera. También, aunque inseparable de lo anterior, un nivel más
personal basado en las propias creencias de los autores hacia este tipo de filosofía,
expresada en manifestaciones no estrictamente literarias, como cartas, memorias o
incluso sus propias acciones vitales.
This bachelor thesis has the objective of investigating the influence of the renowned
German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) in the literary movement
denominated “the generation of 98”, as well as, in two particular authors of said
generation, who are considered especially relevant: Pío Baroja and Miguel de
Unamuno. As the project advances, some elements of Schopenhauer's work will be
examined in order to establish similarities with the authors of the previously
mentioned generation. For this endeavour, philosophical implications in novels,
explicit or otherwise, will be studied, whether through their character's thoughts,
attitude towards life, or the reality with which the reader is presented. Furthermore,
although related to the previous argument, there will be an assessment of the
personal belief the authors held towards this faction of philosophy expressed in nonliterary
work, such as letters, memoirs or even their vital actions.
