Este trabajo explica el desarrollo de los monasterios en el reino de
León entre los siglos X y XII. Se define el concepto de monasterio y su etimología, la
aparición del monacato en Oriente, la creación de las primeras reglas, y su expansión y
desarrollo en Occidente. En segundo lugar, es muy importante comprender el
significado de los monasterios propios debido a su influencia en el reino, sus funciones
y las relaciones entre los diferentes poderes. Finalmente, he tomado cuatro ejemplos
para esta investigación: San Román de Entrepeñas, San Miguel de Escalada, Santa
María de Carracedo y San Martín de Castañeda. Cada monasterio tiene sus propias
características debido a su origen diferente y la adaptación al medio, pero todos tienen
en común los cambios promovidos por la Reforma Gregoriana, introducidos por las
Órdenes de Cluny y el Císter entre los siglos XI y XII. El objetivo de este trabajo es
analizar la evolución del monacato leonés sirviéndome de estos cuatro monasterios.
This work explains the development of the monasteries during the
10th, 11th and 12th centuries and their changes, in the kingdom of León. First, I define the
monastery’s concept, its etymology, the emergence of monasticism in the East, the
creation of the first rules and its expansion and development in the West. Secondly, I
study the meaning of the propietary monasteries because of their influence in the
kingdom, their functions and the relationships among the different powers. Finally, I
analyze four examples: San Román de Entrepeñas, San Miguel de Escalada, Santa
María de Carracedo and San Martín de Castañeda. Each monastery has its own
characteristics due to the different origin and the adaptation to the medium, but
everyone have in common the changes promoted by the Gregorian Reformation,
introduced by the Cluny and Cistercians Orders between 11th and 12th centuries. This
paper aims to analyze the evolution of the Leonese monasticism through these four
monasteries.
