Análisis de las imágenes de los libros de texto de Ciencias Sociales y su uso en el aula

El libro de texto es un importante material escolar en el proceso educativo, actúa como
guía y mediador del contenido para profesorado y alumnado. Sus ilustraciones tienen
además un gran potencial como fuentes de conocimiento en la enseñanza de las
Ciencias Sociales. En este trabajo nos centramos en el análisis de las imágenes del libro
de texto junto con el uso que hacen los docentes y alumnos de este recurso. Enmarcado
en un método mixto abordamos de una manera estadística las ilustraciones, según el
tipo y la función que cumplen en un libro de 5º de Primaria. Realizamos entrevistas a
docentes sobre cómo lo utilizan y, pretendíamos realizar observaciones de aula para ver
la actitud del alumnado. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que, muchas de las
imágenes tienen función estética, y que hay un volumen importante, 26% del total de las
imágenes, que cumplen una función explicativa. Sin embargo, el profesorado que sí
utiliza el libro de texto como recurso y que reconoce el valor de la imagen, apenas las
utiliza, y prefiere otros soportes ilustrativos para desarrollar sus explicaciones. Se
apunta a la necesidad de una mejor formación del profesorado en el uso de la imagen
como recurso didáctico para la enseñanza de las Ciencias Sociales.
The teacher’s textbook is an important resource of scholars in the educational journey.
It is used as a guide and to share the knowledge between professors and students. The
images that the books usually provide are considered as a big resource of knowledge for
the Social Sciences. In this project, we are focusing on the analysis of the illustrations
that our Social Science books offer us and the use of the material by professors. We are
using a mix approach. First, we are using statistics to look at the use of the illustrations
on the textbooks, and second of all, we are looking at the type of illustrations that we
can find on a 5th grade of primary educational textbook. We have conducted interviews
with some professors to understand how they use the resource, and we also wanted to
attend their classes to further investigate in person the reaction of their students.
Statistics indicates that most of the illustrations are only included in the textbooks for
appealing reasons to make the book easier to the readers. On the other hand, 26% of the
time when there are images in our textbooks, they are used for educational purposes. However, the majority of professors who actually use the textbook in their classes, and
recognize the value of the using the images in the textbooks, they do not use them to
facilitate their classroom content. They have confirmed that they prefer to use other
sources to support their statements. Therefore, this is a clear indication of the need of a
better support to our professors when it comes to the use of the images in our Social
Science textbooks while conducting their classroom content. We want them to see the
images on the textbooks as an educational tool.
