Este campo de investigación multidisciplinar involucra a ciencias como la física, la química, la biología y la ingeniería, entre otras. Entre las tendencias más recientes de aplicación de nuevos materiales encontramos la biomedicina, la ingeniería o la sostenibilidad. Los materiales „verdes‟ o respetuosos con el medioambiente han despertado un gran interés en los últimos años debido a la necesidad de frenar el cambio climático y cumplir los objetivos del acuerdo de París de las Naciones Unidas. Son innumerables los descubrimientos que se producen en ciencia de materiales, aunque no todos son lanzados al mercado debido a motivos económicos como la falta de inversión en el sector, la baja rentabilidad económica o la dificultad de producción en masa de determinados materiales. En este trabajo se tratará de abordar algunos de los hallazgos más relevantes o interesantes que puedan tener un impacto medioambiental positivo. New materials are in constant development. This multidisciplinary research field involves different sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology and engineering, among others. Among the more recent trends in the application of new materials, biomedicine, engineering or sustainability are found. For instance, the development of “green” or ecofriendly materials has aroused big interest last years to combat climate change and achieve the objectives of the Paris agreement. Thereby, there are innumerable discoveries that take place in the material area, although not all reach the market due to some economic reasons, like the lack of investment in this sector or its low economic profitability, or due to the difficulty of producing of certain materials in large quantities.
