Sin embargo, no todos los países juegan el mismo papel en el mundo globalizado y fuertemente consumista en el que vivimos, habiendo fuertes contrastes entre el Norte y el Sur. Los países en desarrollo, con rentas muy bajas, aglutinan el 40% de la población mundial y sin embargo, su comercio representa menos del 3% del comercio global. El 10% más rico del planeta exporta 125 veces más que el 10% más pobre. En este marco surge el Comercio Justo, intentando suavizar esas desigualdades y diferencias, garantizando a los consumidores que los productos que adquieren han sido generados bajo condiciones laborales dignas y con un salario adecuado que permite a los pequeños productores salir adelante.
