El Reino Unido se negó a participar de la creación de la CECA (1951), la CEEA y la
CEE (1957), y perdió la oportunidad de incorporarse después debido a los vetos de 1958, 1963
y 1967 del Presidente francés de Gaulle. Finalmente, en 1969 Georges Pompidou les tiende la
mano y en 1973 toma efecto el Tratado de Adhesión. En 1975 un referéndum popular ratifica
esta entrada. Posteriormente, con el gobierno de Margaret Thatcher el euroescepticismo se
vuelve más fuerte y anclado en la derecha, pero se mantiene a raya para la formación de la UE
en 1993, en incluso para la firma el proyecto de constitución para Europa y el Tratado de Lisboa
de 2009. Sin embargo, el referéndum celebrado en 2016 se convirtió en el punto de inflexión.
The United Kingdom refused to participate in the creation of the ECSC (1951), EEC
and EAEC (1957), and lost its opportunity to access afterwards due to de Gaulle’s vetoes in
1958, 1963 and 1967. At the end, in 1969, it was Georges Pompidou the one to lend a helping
hand, and in 1973 the Accession Treaty takes effect. In 1975 a popular referendum ratifies this
accession. Then, under Margaret Thatcher’s government, Euroscepticism became stronger and
anchored in the right wing, but it it’s kept off for the formation of the EU in 1993, and even for
the signing of the European constitution project and the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. Nevertheless,
the referendum celebrated in 2016 turned out to be the breaking point.
