El siglo XVIII fue un momento de profundas transformaciones y reformas en el seno de la sociedad moderna conocida hasta entonces. Los ilustrados propugnan que solamente desde la razón se alcanzaran las transformaciones económicas, políticas y sociales que el país necesitaba. En este contexto nace el Canal de Castilla, surgido como un proyecto que buscaba ser el más importante impulso para la economía regional, el cual, desde sus mismos orígenes, vemos aquí como logró sobrepasar sus expectativas, convirtiéndose en un instrumento transformador no solo a nivel económico, sino también geográfico, demográfico, social y cultural.
