Tras siglos de coleccionismo, los duques de Alba crearon una completa y excelente colección en su Palacio de Liria, construido en el siglo XVIII. Durante la Guerra Civil, este palacio fue incautado y su colección trasladada, salvándose así de su destrucción en el bombardeo del palacio en 1936. Las mejores piezas fueron a Valencia y Barcelona y finalmente a Ginebra, junto a las obras maestras del Museo del Prado o del Museo Arqueológico Nacional. Estas medidas fueron posibles gracias a la legislación desarrollada desde la Segunda República para conservar el Patrimonio. Finalmente, el XVII duque, gran coleccionista y diplomático, reconstruyó el palacio y recuperó su colección, disponiéndola como estaba antes de la guerra.
After centuries of collecting, the Dukes of Alba created a complete and excellent collection in their Palace of Liria, built in the 18th century. During the Civil War, this palace was seized, and its collection was transferred, being saved from its destruction in the bombing of the palace in 1936. The best pieces went to Valencia and Barcelona and finally to Geneva, beside the masterpieces of the Museo del Prado and the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. These actions were possible thanks to the legislation developed from the Second Republic to preserve the Heritage. Finally, the 17th duke, a great collector and diplomat, rebuilt the palace and recovered his collection, arranging it as it was before the war.
