Con la aparición de la COVID-19 la población ha volcado sus preocupaciones en
la salud, pero esta no es la primera epidemia que atraviesa el mundo, desde
siempre nuestros antepasados han sido capaces de sobreponerse y buscar
soluciones a numerosos problemas sanitarios. Cuando aparecen unidos los
términos de ciudad y salud, parece que la primera respuesta induce a pensar en
buscar un vínculo a través de los equipamientos sanitarios que existen en la
ciudad, pero no solo existe esta relación, es más, todos los elementos y aspectos
del diseño de la ciudad: los materiales usados, la vegetación empleada, la altura
de los edificios, el ancho de las calles, la organización de la movilidad, etc,
repercuten positiva o negativamente en la salud física y mental de los
ciudadanos. Por lo que es necesario conocer lo que ocurrió en el pasado, para
no cometer los mismos errores, además de investigar sobre los nuevos
problemas que aparecen, debidos a la actividad urbana, para tratar de atajarlos.
Este trabajo se centrará en conocer el devenir de cuatro elementos ligados a la
ciudad y la salud durante toda su historia: la vegetación, el agua, el aire y el sol,
para sintetizar las claves que a día de hoy mejoraran nuestras ciudades, y por
consiguiente la salud de los que viven en ellas.
With the emergence of COVID-19, the population has turned its concerns to
health, but this is not the first epidemic that the world has experienced, and for
many years our ancestors have been able to overcome and seek solutions to
numerous health problems. When the terms city and health appear together, it
seems that the first response leads one to think of looking for a link through the
health facilities that exist in the city, but this is not the only relationship, in fact, all
the elements and aspects of the design of the city: the materials used, the
vegetation employed, the height of the buildings, the width of the streets, the
organisation of mobility, etc, have a positive or negative impact on the physical
and mental health of the citizens. It is therefore necessary to know what
happened in the past in order not to make the same mistakes, as well as to
investigate the new problems that appear due to urban activity in order to try to
tackle them. This work will focus on the history of four elements linked to the city
and health throughout its history: vegetation, water, air and sun, in order to
synthesise the keys that today will improve our cities, and consequently the health
of those who live in them.
