Santos protectores y patronos en Castilla: el caso de san Antolín en Palencia

La presencia de los santos protectores es un fenómeno extendido por toda la Europa
católica, si bien exportado a los demás lugares del mundo conocido, teniendo sus inicios en
los primeros mártires y adquiriendo gran versatilidad durante los siglos medievales y la época
moderna. El caso de Castilla permite observar una gran variedad de patronos masculinos en la
diversidad de cada uno de los reinos y diócesis, siendo tomados como símbolo de identidad y
de protección y naciendo junto a ellos leyendas y relatos. El ejemplo más particular de san
Antolín es el que domina la tradición en Palencia, siendo un paradigma bastante exclusivo, no
solo la presencia de su patronazgo, sino también la realidad propia del santo.
The presence of patron saints is widespread throughout Catholic Europe, although it
has been exported to other parts of the known world, having its beginnings in the first martyrs
and acquiring great versatility during the medieval and modern centuries. The case of Castile
allows us to observe a great variety of male patron saints in the diversity of each of the
kingdoms and dioceses, being taken as a symbol of identity and protection and giving rise to
legends and stories; the most particular example of Saint Antonin is the one that dominates
the tradition in Palencia, being a rather exclusive paradigm, not only the presence of his
patronage, but also the reality of the saint himself
