Las células madre son fundamentales en nuestro organismo y también lo
son en el ojo. En la superficie ocular las células madre más estudiadas son las
que se encuentran en el epitelio limbar; son las llamadas células madre limbo
corneales. Pero los estudios más recientes también sitúan células madre en la
conjuntiva, tanto en el epitelio como en el estroma. En este trabajo se lleva a
cabo una revisión bibliográfica de dichas células. Las células madre epiteliales
están repartidas por todo el epitelio conjuntival, pero la región más enriquecida
es el epitelio del fórnix, en comparación con los epitelios bulbar o palpebral. Las
del estroma conjuntival son células madre mesenquimales. A lo largo de este
trabajo se revisan los distintos marcadores empleados para identificar y
localizar estas células madre, se describen sus características y se analiza su
implicación en la práctica clínica y terapéutica.
Stem cells are essential in our body and they are also essential in the
eye. The most studied stem cells within the ocular surface are those found in
the limbar epithelium; they are the so-called corneal limbus stem cells. But the
latest studies have also localized stem cells in the conjunctiva, both in the
epithelium and in the stroma. In this work, a bibliographic review of these cells
is carried out. Epithelial stem cells are distributed throughout the conjunctival
epithelium, but the most enriched region is the forniceal epithelium, compared
to bulbar or palpebral epithelia. Those of the conjunctival stroma are
mesenchymal stem cells. Throughout this work, the different markers used to
identify and locate these stem cells are reviewed, their characteristics are
described, and their implication in clinical and therapeutic practice is analyzed.
