La intervención social con familias compuestas por personas con Síndrome de
Down es una realidad que deben afrontar familias y profesionales después del
diagnóstico. Ésta es diferente, dependiendo del contexto vivido y de las
características de cada individuo. La salud, las relaciones sociales o la
personalidad entre otras, son variables que modifican el contexto. Entendiendo
lo que es el Síndrome de Down y valorándose en su ámbito, hace que la familia
tenga un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de la autonomía y de la capacidad
de decidir de sus miembros. Las instituciones que las acompañan son un gran
apoyo con las que se complementan y se ayudan en su día a día, teniendo
posibilidad de aprovechar sus recursos y servicios.
El estudio tiene como finalidad conocer la importancia de la intervención social
posterior al diagnóstico de Síndrome de Down en el entorno familiar, siendo
relevante el papel de la familia y mirándolo desde el enfoque del Trabajo Social.
Para ello, se ha realizado una investigación. Se ha realizado en Valladolid y
Segovia, mediante el método cualitativo de las entrevistas semiestructuradas a
familias y profesionales de esta área.
Los resultados nos han permitido conocer sus limitaciones y fortalezas en cuanto
a la intervención social con personas con Síndrome de Down, destacando el
importante papel que tienen dentro de la intervención social.
Social intervention with families composed of individuals with Down Syndrome is
a reality the family and professional must face after diagnosis. This is different
depending on the lived context and the characteristics of each individual; health,
social relationships, or personality among others are variables that modify the
context. Understanding what Down Syndrome is and valuing it in its context
means that the family plays a fundamental role in the development of autonomy
and decision-making capacity of its members. The institutions that accompany
them are a great support with which they complement and help in their day-today, having the possibility to take advantage of their resources and services.
The study aims to understand the significance of social intervention following a
Down Syndrome diagnosis within the family environment, emphasizing the
relevant role of the family. This is viewed from the perspective of Social Work. To
achieve this, research was conducted in Valladolid and Segovia, using the
qualitative method of semi-structured interviews with families and professionals
in this area.
The results have allowed us to understand their limitations and strengths in terms
of social intervention with people with Down Syndrome, highlighting the important
role they play within social intervention.
