La indecorosa situación eclesiástica en la cristiandad occidental hacia finales de la Edad
Media motivó el desarrollo de distintos programas que pretendieron la renovación moral del
clero. El impulso otorgado a la reforma durante el reinado de los Reyes Católicos permitió al
mitrado Alonso Carrillo de Albornoz efectuar diferentes actuaciones vinculadas a este
movimiento. La mayor realización como prelado de Ávila fruto de su espíritu reformador y
reformado la constituye la promulgación a finales de su episcopado del Libro de estatutos de la
Catedral de Ávila de 1513. Estas constituciones pretridentinas presentan un gran interés por la
disciplina eclesiástica impulsada en la reforma antes de la Reforma. La existencia en la sede
abulense de una corriente renovadora desde mediados del siglo XV favoreció la promulgación
de la recopilación estatutaria de 1513, que se mantuvo vigente hasta el siglo XVIII.
The indecorous ecclesiastical situation experienced in western Christianity at the end of
the Middle Ages led to the emergence of several programmes which intended to restore clergy´s
morals. The boost given to the reformation during the Catholic Monarchs´ reign allowed bishop
Alonso Carrillo de Albornoz to carry out different actions linked to this movement. His greatest
attainment as Avila´s prelate as a result of his reforming and reformed spirit was the
promulgation at the end of his episcopate of the Statutory Book of Ávila´s Cathedral from 1513.
These pretridentine constitutions have a large interest in the ecclesiastical discipline promoted
in the reformation prior to the Reformation. The existence of a renovating trend in Ávila´s see
since mid-fifteenth century favoured the promulgation of the statutory compilation from 1513,
which remained current until eighteenth century.
