Slurs y polarización política

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el funcionamiento de los slurs en situaciones de
polarización política. Sostenemos que su uso refuerza las narrativas ideológicas activas en estas
situaciones y, con ello, profundiza la polarización afectiva. Los slurs no son meros insultos, sino
expresiones lingüísticas que denigran a los individuos por su pertenencia a un grupo. Reproducen
y legitiman ideologías que sostienen situaciones injustas, actuando como dispositivos discursivos
que normalizan el trato denigrante y violento hacia determinados grupos. En situaciones de
polarización afectiva, el uso de slurs refuerza las narrativas políticas divisivas que están activas
en esa situación, al situar a los individuos y grupos como los actores de tales narrativas. El
artículo se estructura en tres secciones: en primer lugar, se revisan las principales teorías sobre
los slurs y se propone un enfoque que pueda explicar el daño que causan a través de su relación
con la ideología; en segundo lugar, se analiza esta relación; y finalmente, se examina el papel que
desempeñan estas expresiones en contextos de polarización política.
This paper aims to analyze the functioning of slurs in situations of political polarization. We
argue that their use reinforces the ideological narratives active in these situations and, thus,
deepens affective polarization. Slurs are not mere insults, but linguistic expressions that derogate
individuals on the basis of their group membership. They reproduce and legitimize ideologies
that sustain unjust situations, acting as discursive devices that normalize denigrating and violent
treatment of certain groups. In situations of affective polarization, the use of slurs reinforces the
divisive political narratives that are active in that situation, by situating individuals and groups as
the actors of such narratives. The article is structured in three sections: first, it reviews the main
theories on slurs and proposes an approach that can explain the harm they cause through their
relationship with ideology; second, it analyzes this relationship; and finally, it examines the role
played by these expressions in contexts of political polarization.
