An important problem was that a higher degree of literality was required, and this requirement collided with the Greek and Roman literary tradition, which enphatically refused the translation uerbatim. Besides of that, a literal translation could hardly avoid the formal roughness of the text (also against the Greek and Roman literary taste) and its internal incongruities. By means of a special device, the tropology, St. Jerome tried to keep literality and avoid formal roughness or internal incongruities offering a third and true level of comprehending the text. Hebrew proper names were a big help for achieving his purpose. Lograr una única y fidedigna versión de la Biblia era, por muchas razones, una tarea bien difícil. Una de las dificultades consistía en que el alto nivel de literalidad requerido chocaba con la tradición literaria griega y romana, la cual rechazaba frontalmente la traducción uerbatim. Además una traducción literal difícilmente podía eludir la rudeza formal del texto (algo que iba también contra el gusto griego y latino) y sus incoherencias internas. Mediante un expediente especial, la tropología, S. Jerónimo intentó mantener la literalidad y evitar la rudeza formal y las incongruencias internas, ofreciendo un tercer y verdadero nivel para comprender el texto.
