AB This study analyses the development of the Spanish phrase en el fondo as a discourse marker. The evolution from its propositional lexical meaning to its procedural meaning is a grammaticalization process parallel to other markers, which outstanding features are the growing process of subjectification and the removal of contextual elements associated from its origin. From a semantic and pragmatic point of view, this paper analyses the persistence of part of the original lexical meaning in the procedural meaning as a discourse marker.
