T1 La competencia en lengua materna (español) de los estudiantes de traducción e interpretación: Un estudio de caso

AB One of the key components of translation competence is the so-called bilingual subcompetence (Pacte 2005; Kelly 2002) and, as a part of this, competence in the mother tongue, essential for translator trainees (García Izquierdo et al. 1999). However, in recent years there is evidence of a gradual deterioration in trainees’ use of their mother tongue in Spain. This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted on first-year students of Translation and Interpreting, the purpose of which was to detect the main errors made by these students in their mother tongue, typify them and try to understand their origins, with the ultimate goal of preventing their occurrence by means of activities designed for classroom use.
