RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Los Juan Martínez de Recalde, de Bilbao: de mercaderes a heroe naval (1504-1588) A1 Fagel, Raymond A2 Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid K1 Historia moderna y contemporánea AB During the reign of Charles V, Juan Martínez de Recalde from Bilbao organized the emperor's fleets on the Spanish north coast. He was also responsible for a maritime messager service between the north coast, England and the Low Countries, using small ships. Furthermore, he coordinated the transport of Spanish troops to the Low Countries, to be used in the wars against the French. In 1588, the great naval officer Juan Martínez de Recalde occupied an important place in the history of the Invincible Armada. Specially in English and American literature we find him as the most important naval officer of the fleet. He died shortly after returning to Spain following a disastrous journey around the British Isles. In this article I try to link the history of both men, Charles V's maritime coordinator and Philip II's naval hero. We can find different people called Juan Martínez de Recalde in Bilbao from 1504 onwards, always related to the relations between Spain and the northern parts of Europe. At the same time, we are able to study their relationship with the Habsburg government. They are a clear example of a family that could maintain its mercantile vocation for a long time, while gradually entering into the service of the crown. It shows the relations between the royal burocracy and the comercial world.
