RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Conflictividad social en torno a la limpieza de sangre en la España Moderna A1 Ruiz Ibáñez, José Javier A1 Hernández Franco, Juan A2 Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid K1 Historia moderna y contemporánea AB Each time historical research is carried out, a greater degree of conflict, not strictly synonymous with violence, is unearthed in social relationships in modern Castile. This article analyses the causes of a conflict experienced in an established society which imposed, in its turn, a caste system and made ethnic and religious purity a mark of distinction. The result of this was the breaking up of society into two groups, old and new Christians, both with full civil rights but with different levels of social recognition. It is true that a large number of discourses and intellectual arguments attempted to prove the superiority of old Christians, which would be on a par with provoking stormy social conflict, since new Christians would have been denied access to respected and powerful institutions and positions of high office. However, in practice, the very instrument which ought too have ignited the conflict, the statutes related to purity of blood, in the end dissipated it and channelled the process of determining whether or not a person was an old Christian through a judicial process. This judicial process was not very strict, and allowed the past to be manipulated, thus permitting "impure" members to enter the group.
