AB This article examines how the protection of the marine environment in the EU has gradually become a political priority. The implementation of the Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP), in spite of all its shortcomings, has contributed to the creation of a ‘common maritime space in the EU’ governed by the same standards of safety, protection and preservation of the marine environment. In this context, it is particularly important the role of the European Marine Strategy that provides the environmental pillar of the IMP. The adoption of Directive 2008/56/EC establishing a framework for community action in the field of marine environmental policy (DMEM) represents one of the greatest challenges of the EU to protect the marine environment. Since its entry into force, it has been completed the first phase of its implementation with some achievements and, as we´ve pointed out in this article, with some limitations that should be corrected.
