AB The article analyses the category of ambiguity in the literary work of Borges within the framework of cognitive linguistics. In cognitive linguistics ambiguity results from the multiple and/or variable conceptual mapping of the statement. It is an inalienable property of literary language; it conveys the author's intention and invites the reader to reflexive and participatory attitude. The interpretation of the rhetorical figures, based on the cognitive operations of correlation, similarity or contrast, depends on the reader's individual patterns of knowing and thinking. The recurrent use of rhetorical figures contributes to the degree of ambiguity in the text.
