AB This study aims to explore to what extent the grammatical theory may aspire to make a characterization of the form and function of the linguistic categories involved in productive morphological processes found in compounds such as cuellilargo or lavaplatos. We present a characterization of the Spanish productive compounding patterns with an analysis grounded on the nanosintactic model (especially of synthetic argument compounds,VN). In this mode of explanation, nominalization can occur in the absence of derivative procedures and we can capture the similarities between the derivative and compositional procedures. Finally, the role of thematic vowel reinforces the idea that composition and derivation systems conform parallel but fundamentally identical processes of word formation.
