The American mink, an exotic mammal in Europe, represents a major threat to the European mink, but modification of river bed, loss and destruction of riparian habitat and drainage of wetlands also increase its vulnerability. Therefore, restoration of its riparian habitat has a great importance in the conservation of native mink. The main goal of the project is to better understand the bioecological characteristics of the area and then, knowing the deficiencies observed in the structure and functioning of the riparian habitat, to create there optimal habitat conditions to the European mink. These goals become part of one of the general objectives of the Spanish National Hydrological Program: to obtain good conditions and adecuate protection for the Public Watercourse Domain. Some of the specific actions being developed by the elaboration of the project are as follows: to carry out an assesment of the riparian habitat as a basis which makes possible to identify the main factors affecting European mink living conditions; to propose conservation measures for riverbank vegetation recovery; to stabilize eroded shores by means of bioengineering techniques for improving the hydrological conditions in the area, which would increase the availability of shelter for the European mink and for other associated riparian species and to facilitate food resources by means of the designing of a permanent spawning-pond for amphibians SN 2173-8947 YR 2017 FD 2017 LK http://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/23594 UL http://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/23594 LA spa NO TRIM: revista de investigación multidisciplinar, 2017, N.12, pags.47-58 DS UVaDOC RD 24-nov-2024
