AB Smallpox scourge of the early ages of life began a decline since the 18th century, first with the inoculation at the beginning of the century, and from 1796 epidemiological vaccination discovered by the English Surgeon Edward Jenner (1749-1823).The rapid spread of the vaccine came to Spain, by the French border at Puigcerda, acroos the Iberian Peninsula. The Government of Carlos IV carried out the famous expedition of vaccine flantropica. This expedition made by several physicians and employees, and twenty-two children, who had not been smallpox, intended to preserve the precious fluid, transmitting it on arm in arm with each other, in the course of navigation, left the port of La Coruña, under the direction of Balmis, November 30, 1803, made its first stop in the Canary Islands the second in Puerto Rico, and the third in Caracas. Out of this province by the port of La Guayra, divided in two branches, sailing one for South America, carried out by the Deputy Director Don Francisco Galvany, and contacting each other, with Director Balmis, to Havana, and from there to Yucatan. In this province is subdivided, leaving the port of the Siral Professor for the Villahermosa, Tabasco province, to spread the vaccine for Ciudad Real in Chiapas to Guatemala, turning the dilated and fragoso path of four hundred miles to Oaxaca, while the rest of the expedition, that happily arrived at Veracruz, traveled not only throughout the Viceroyalty of New Spain, but the internal provinces where should return to Mexico, which was the point of meeting.Balmis then continued his journey westward. From Acapulco it carried vaccines to the Philippines and Visayas, Macau and Canton, to the island of St. Helena. Salvany, meanwhile, spread it in the cities and rural villages of Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Buenos Aires. Spain wrote a page cleaner, more human and more authentic civilization ever written in the history.
