AB Study of the life and work of the academic Santiago Bonilla Mirat, born in Salamanca in 1844, whose historical existence lasted until 1899, year in which he died in Madrid.Professor of Chemistry, first at the University of Valladolid, and then at the Central University of Madrid, where teaching gave the last years of his life. It was academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Valladolid, also of the RoyalAcademy of exact, physical and natural sciences of Madrid. Leading figure of 19th-century Spanish chemistry is a clear representative of positivist thought, highlighting his elementary treatise on chemistry (1880), which were up to eight successive editions. Prominent defender of atomism, in his speech of entry in the Royal Academy of Sciences of Madrid (1898), was a clear proponent of spectral analysis and the periodic system of chemical elements. The work of Bonilla Mirat had a key role in the epidemic of cholera in Valladolid in 1885, being the creator of the micrograph laboratory Municipal and Provincial.
