RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 El Greco y El Escorial: De Felipe II a Felipe IV A1 Bustamante García, Agustín A2 Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid K1 Arte AB In 1577 El Greco arrived to Spain; in Toledo he was commissioned to paint two works:the Disrobing of Christ for the Cathedral and the altarpieces ofr the church of the convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo, these two paintings came him to be famous. In 1580, Philip II commisioned him a painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Maurice for the church of the monastery of El Escorial. The painting did no please the King, who purchased, but it was never put in the church. The controversy caused by this painting was wrote by José de Sigüenza. When Philip IV renewed the decoration of El Escorial, there were only paintings of two spanish painters, in the new colections: José de Ribera and El Greco, the paintings of El Greco were The Glory of Philip II, Saint Peter and Saint Ildefonso. In the 17th century, El Greco was still being an exceptional painter.
