A1 Alonso Martín, Julio Alfonso A1 Lievens, Peter A1 Janssens, Ewald K1 Catalysis AB The study of small clusters, particles composed of only a few atoms, is not onlyinteresting because of their intrinsic physical properties, strongly influenced byquantum confinement and subjected to significant size-to-size variations, but alsobecause clusters are ideal model systems for the investigation of complex chemicalreactions. In this article, we describe how doped platinum clusters composedof less than 20 atoms can be used to address questions about physical and chemicalprocesses taking place in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. Combiningmass spectrometric experiments with theoretical calculations, the particular role ofdopant-induced electronic charge transfers in the interaction of platinum nanoparticleswith carbon monoxide molecules is investigated.
