AB Audiovisual materials are translated in order to be accessible to other communities apartfrom the one firstly intended. One common method used for their translation is subtitling,which consists in keeping the original audio and introducing a synchronized translation of itin the lower part of the image. Subtitles are really particular as they have a number ofcharacteristics as the time that each subtitle can appear on screen or the maximum lengthallowed. All these former factors determine the final result. Moreover, it is important tobear in mind that audiovisual materials contain elements such as cultural references orhumour that present a challenge for translators. These particular aspects of subtitling aregoing to be analysed with examples of the American sitcom Modern Family and its Spanishsubtitles.
