Following the debate of the critics of the Old English literature from the past fifty years, it analyses the translations by Conybeare (1826), Freeman (1869), Robinson (1885), Hickey (1885), Lumsden (1887), Ker (1887) and Butterfield (1900). Moreover, it examines how each translation treats the original poem as a historical source, a literary work or shows a particular ideological function. It can be demonstrated that most of the translations treat the poem with a literary perspective as an instructive or formal text but few others maintain the historical vision, and that all this depends on the ideological stand of the translator or the editor.
