The proposed system makes use of asocial robot behavioral architecture already developed in ourlab, which allows us to interchange developments between ourrobotic realizations and the 3D avatar. The overall system is dividedinto two parts: back projection subsystem and expressiongenerator subsystem. The back projection subsystem projects athree-dimensional avatar onto a pyramidal structure in orderto achieve a sensation of depth and realism. The expressiongenerator subsystem carries out the avatar animations usingshape keys and bones, following the Facial Action CodingSystem (FACS). The system consists in several nodes that areintegrated in ROS middleware (Robotic Operating System), andincludes a user interface that makes the avatar teleoperationeasier (the package is avaible in github public respository). Inorder to evaluate the expressiveness of the system, two sets ofexperiments have been performed: one to analyze the avatar’sgestural ability, that is, its capability to perform expressionsthat can be identified by an observer, and a second experimentto measure the emotion displaying ability in terms of valenceand arousal.
