Learning a foreign language implies much more than just acquiring some of its basic grammatical structures or even the whole vocabulary. Indeed, without obtaining some insight into the development of one’s cultural awareness, the intercultural communicative competence needed to communicate, act and interact accordingly in any unrehearsed situation in the target language context, would be extremely challenging to be acquired by learners. In order to achieve this, there is a need to increase the concerns about the importance of teaching culture to learners of foreign languages. Therefore, this dissertation proposes a project and presents a small case study to prove that it is feasible to introduce culture in high schools in order to lead students to develop their cultural awareness at those levels. The results of this case study reveal both that more importance should be given to teaching culture in English as a foreign language and that if students are exposed to cultural aspects, their cultural awareness will increase.
