Facultad de Filosofía y Letras K1 5701.11 Enseñanza de Lenguas AB This undergraduate dissertation presents a grammatical study on the production of the passive structures by English monolingual children. The passive produced are classified according to a three-paired typology (i.e. short versus long, adjectival versus verbal, and actional versus nonactional passives). The type of data analyzed in the study is spontaneous and reflects the production of seventeen North American speaking children (3;0-10;0 years old) from the CHILDES database (MacWhinney, 2000). The analysis of the data points out three main results: i) short passives are more frequently produced than long passives, especially at early ages; ii) verbal passives are more often produced than adjectival passives; and iii) nonactional passives are very scarce in the production of children. An additional unexpected result was derived from the analysis, i.e. the usage of get as an auxiliary in the passive structure is more frequent than the usage of be. This study concludes that certain types of passives are favored by monolingual children depending on the length or the type of lexical verb found in the structure.
