Taking people's childhood as a starting point and a critical phase ofdevelopment, Freud analyses people's unconscious to understand the human personality. In addition to considering Freudian psychoanalysis as an important point for thisundergraduate dissertation, gender identity will also be studied through the characters andthe society in which they live. This is because gender identity has always been a tabooconcept in many cultures and its study is important to understand the injustices andobstacles that certain communities have suffered. Hence, this paper aims to analyse theconnection between childhood trauma and gender identity in the characters of The Silenceof the Lambs (1988) by Thomas Harris to establish that the trauma that occurred in theirpast is directly connected to discrimination and gender characterization in their currentlives.
