Wolfgang Iser in The Act of Reading explores in 1994 the same phenomenon from a theoretical perspective. In this BA Thesis, a qualitative analysis of the former using the theoretical tools of the latter has been carried out with a double focus. First, the process of entrainment has been used to describe the different gaits that Tristram aims to impart on readers. According to this view, Tristram seems to be trying to make readers conscious of their different reading approaches. Then, the blank page of the widow Wadman has been analysed as a blank that triggers and controls the reader’s activity.
