In order to do that, forty English-language tragic films produced, mostly, in the United States in the periods of 1939-2021 have been studied. Tragic characters in those movies have been considered under the light of Baumeister and Scher’s model of Common Self-Destructive Tendencies (CSDT) (1988). From this analysis, an original classification of tragedy is presented consisting of three types taking the fall of the character as its central element: Masochistic Tragedy, Self-Immolation Tragedy and Clumsy and Self-Deceit Tragedy. The study eventually concludes that the CSDT Model is a useful tool both for the analysis of tragic characters and their falls as well as for the establishment of a typology of the tragic.
