The novel deals with the tragic story of a former slave, Sethe, whosedecision to escape from the plantation did not save her from the trauma of slavery. Thepurpose of this B.A. thesis is to analyze the main themes of the novel and correlate themwith current racial issues in the U.S. This analysis of the themes is intended todemonstrate that what Morrison aims is to take the reader down a path of rememory ofthe past. I will conclude by making a comparison of how Morrison's motif in the novelcan be applied to current racial problems and how her vision in addressing theseproblems mirrors the goals of the BLM movement.
