Previous studies on childlanguage acquisition have shown differences in the acquisition of lexical vs. functionalprepositions in English. However, other studies show that this difference is not as markedin languages like Spanish. In the light of previous formal studies and acquisition works, this study analyzes the production of the English prepositions in and of, taking the formeras lexical and the latter as functional, in the spontaneous longitudinal data from twoSpanish/English simultaneous bilingual children. The aim is to determine whether thepattern of acquisition of English prepositions exhibited by Spanish/English bilingualchildren is similar to that of English monolingual children. The results suggest that thehybrid nature of prepositions may not affect the Spanish/English bilingual children asmuch as it affects the English monolingual children. This points to crosslinguisticdifferences in the acquisition of lexical and functional prepositions and to potentialcrosslinguistic influence effects from Spanish into English.
