Universities freely decide the number of credits assigned to each subject and in which year it is taught. This flexibility can lead to heterogeneous training among Nursing universities in Spain, which could hinder inter-university mobility and weaken educational excellence. The objectives of this thesis were: 1) to analyze the distribution of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits in the Nursing Degree in Spain by university, according to the legal status and the Spanish region, and classifying them by courses, subjects and thematic blocks; 2) to compare our results against the Spanish and European legislation and against the proposals of the Nursing Degree “White Book” (“Libro Blanco”); and 3) to put forward, if necessary, legislative changes aimed at homogenizing nursing academic training while respecting current legislation. Methods: A mixed methods study was carried out analyzing the Nursing Degree curricula of all 60 Spanish universities. The research process followed five steps: 1) data triangulation and coding by subject and thematic blocks linking keywords, carried out by an expert focus group (Forum I); 2) peer review of curricula content; 3) statistical analysis; 4) comparison of results against the current legislation and the “White Book”; and 5) legislative proposal prepared by the focus group (Forum II).Results: We observed high variability between universities in ECTS credits by course, subject blocks, and thematic blocks in the Spanish Nursing Degree curricula. There were statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in the distribution of credits according to legal status. Public universities include more credits in core subjects during the first year, more compulsory subject credits in the second year, and more internship credits during the second cycle. In addition, they offer more ECTS credits than private universities in the thematic blocks "Nutrition/Dietetics", "Psychiatry", "Community/Public Health" and "Geriatrics". Private universities offer more internship credits during the first cycle and more ECTS credits in the thematic blocks “Theory/Methodology”, “Ethics/Legislation”, “English” and “Theology”. There are also statistically significant differences in the number of credits between Spanish regions in the second cycle internships and in the “Pharmacology” thematic block. Most curricula comply with the Spanish and European legislation. There are distinct differences between the proportion of ECTS credits by thematic blocks proposed in the “White Book” and the actual Spanish curricula. Based on the analysis of the curricula, the expert focus group prepared a legislative proposal that allocates the 240 ECTS credits by subjects and with a specific time structure, distributed by courses and cycles throughout the Nursing Degree. The proposal defines 97.5% (234/240) of all ECTS credits, leaving the remaining 2.5% (6/240) to be allocated freely by each university. Conclusions: Nursing degree curricula among Spanish universities are highly heterogeneous, with great differences observed in the distribution of ECTS credits depending on the universities’ legal status and region. However, most curricula comply with both Spanish and European legislations. Our legislative proposal defines how curricular should allocate ECTS by subject and within a specific time structure. Following our proposal, the variability between curricula would be reduced, while respecting current legislation.
