To address this global objective, we propose three specific objectives that are treated separately in each of the articles. The first one consists of determining how the deterioration of the Spanish labour market, as a result of the economic crisis of 2008, affected the labour intensity and income of two-parent and single-parent households. Few studies have analysed the labour impact of the Great Recession in households according to family structure, focusing mainly on the Anglo-Saxon sphere. Secondly, we examine the effect of single parenthood on child deprivation according to the educational level of the mothers in Italy and Spain. In this sense, the growth of single parenthood among women with a low educational level has been very recent in southern European countries, so knowledge of its consequences on child well-being is still limited. Finally, from a comparative European perspective, the relationship between the employment situation of parents of single-parent families and child deprivation is analysed. For this, the possible moderating effect of gender equality in the labour market and family benefits in this relationship is taken into account. With the results obtained, we intend to provide evidence on trends in inequalities between two-parent and single-parent households in countries such as Spain and Italy, as well as recommendations on family and gender policies that can improve the economic and employment situation of single-parent families. Given the lack of studies on these topics, it could prove very relevant and timely to provide information about the inequalities associated with family structure in southern Europe and about the contextual factors in European countries that can contribute to greater child material well-being in single-parent households.
