To estimate the parents´ stress when their child has a feeding problem (FP), the repercussion on the family psychological health status, as well as to know the paediatrician's point of view.Methods. Two independent studies were conducted. 1) Case (FP) control study (healthy controls and controls with digestive disorders or sick controls). Parental stress and quality of life in these families were assessed using validated scales (Parent Stress Index Short Form [PSI-SF] and Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire [GHQ-28]. 2) A survey of paediatricians' opinions. Results: 1) 238 parents´ surveys were collected; 102 from healthy controls, 88 with digestive disorders and 48 from FP. Almost half of the FP parents disagreed with their paediatrician. More than half acknowledged problems in their social, work and family life, with psychological impact according to the GHQ-28 scale: 54.2% according to baseline values (adjusted odds ratio [ORa] vs healthy controls 4.18, 95% confidence interval [95% CI95%] 1.96-8.87; vs diseased controls ORa 6.25, 95% CI95% 2.79-13.98) and 33.3% according to our healthy controls. They also had higher stress scores (PSI-SF) than healthy controls (adjusted mean difference [MAD] 21; 95%CI 12.19-29.81) and sick controls (MAD 20; 95%CI 9.81-30.19). 2) 211 surveys were collected from pediatricians: 90% of them acknowledged the psychological impact on parents, but less than half advised them professional assessment. They consider their concern to be excessive, which is the main reason for referral to a specialist. Almost half of them recognize that families are not satisfied about the consultation. The diagnostic criteria are known by only 61.1% of them.Conclusions. Parents of FP children have high levels of stress and risk of anxiety and depression, with repercussions at the social, family, couple, and work levels. In addition, the relationship with the paediatrician may be affected.
